Tybee Island Nightlife: 8 Bars & Live-Music Spots Near South Beach

Tybee's nightlife fits inside a few blocks. There's no district and no run of clubs, just a short street that ends at a pier, the avenue crossing it, and a stretch of Butler a few blocks up. The bars are scattered along those three. One has been on Tybrisa since 1948. Another one's headline feature is a wall of frozen daiquiri machines.

Eight of them are close enough to the pier that an evening out doesn't involve the car. That's the list. It is not a ranking, and it is not the whole island, because the island's other good bars are genuinely somewhere else and we'd rather say so than stretch the word "near."

First, why there are no hours in this post

We looked for them. Wet Willie's publishes hours on a page that carries no date. Past that, the island's directories give you names and addresses and stop. Not one operator down here posts a seasonal schedule, an off-season change, or a closing time we'd be willing to print next to our own name.

So each entry below tells you what a place is rather than when it's open. If a particular bar is the reason you're walking four blocks, call it first. We also found no evidence that any of these eight shuts down for the season, and since no source tracks it, we're not going to claim one way or the other.

The same caution applies to music. Two of the places here have reputations for it, and the island's visitor pages describe their schedules in confident terms. Those pages aren't dated and they aren't the venues' own calendars. We'll pass along what they say and label it as secondhand, which is what it is.

The list runs by street, starting on Tybrisa and working outward.

1. Doc's Bar, 10 Tybrisa Street

Doc's has been on this street since 1948. On a barrier island that takes a direct hit from weather every few years, staying in one place for that long is its own credential. It reads as a barroom rather than a restaurant with a bar bolted on.

There's bumper pool, which is not a table you find in many bars anymore. And the island's live-music guide has Doc's down for Friday and Saturday nights, which we'd treat as the usual pattern rather than a promise, for the reasons above.

2. Wet Willie's, 16 Tybrisa Street

The frozen-daiquiri wall is the concept, and the Tybee location is part of a chain that runs on it. When the island's tourism bureau lists nightlife on the south end, this is the first name it gives.

One thing to state plainly rather than let a reader trip over it later: Wet Willie's publishes its Tybee address as 16 Tybrisa Street. So do we. We haven't confirmed with ownership how the two sit in relation to each other, so that's exactly where we'll leave it. Same number, same street, no claim past that.

3. Tybee Time, 1603 Strand Avenue

Turn at the bottom of Tybrisa and this is the stretch. Tybee Time is a sports bar with something like ten frozen-drink machines going and karaoke on the schedule, which is a fair summary of the range down here: a game on a screen, a slushy drink, and someone taking a run at a song they shouldn't.

4. Fannie's on the Beach, 1613 Strand Avenue

The upstairs balcony is the thing people mention about Fannie's. What we can tell you for certain is that it's upstairs and it's outdoors, and on a street this flat, one storey up changes an evening more than it sounds like it would.

5. Spanky's Beachside, Strand Avenue

Spanky's appears in the island's business directories on this same short stretch of Strand. We could not find a published street number for it anywhere, so we aren't going to invent one. It's on the block, it's inside the same walk as everything else on Strand, and that's the honest extent of what we know.

6. Pier 16 Seafood, 1601 Inlet Avenue

Inlet Avenue sits just back from the corner where Tybrisa meets Strand, which puts Pier 16 roughly a block off the boards. It turns up on the island's restaurant listings and its nightlife listings both, so it works either as dinner or as the stop where your group can actually hear each other. Beyond that we'd be guessing at the room, and we won't.

7. Sting Ray's Seafood, 1403 Butler Avenue

Butler is a few blocks up and away from the water, and the density picks back up when you get there. Sting Ray's carries a line the island's visitor guide repeats as "Voted Best Margarita on Tybee," which is a claim we're happy to pass along and in no position to referee.

The same guide describes live music here nightly. Nightly is a strong word for an undated page to be using, so take it as the reputation rather than the calendar. Either way, plan Butler as an evening walk. In April or October it's nothing at all. After a full beach day in July you'll feel every block of it.

8. Rock House Bar & Grill, 1518 Butler Avenue

Karaoke, DJs and local musicians, plus darts and pool tables. Rock House is the one on this list with the most to do besides drink, which matters more than it seems on a night when half your group wants music and the other half wants something to aim at.

Good, but not near South Beach

These come up in every conversation about Tybee bars, and every one of them is a drive or a long walk from the hub. Including them without saying so would be the whole problem with most nightlife lists.

The Deck Beachbar & Kitchen, 404 Butler Avenue. Up at Mid Beach, roughly a mile north of the hub, and a genuinely oceanfront restaurant. That's the Deck's water, not ours. Nothing at Sea and Breeze looks at the ocean and we'd rather repeat that here than let an oceanfront mention drift down the page.

North Beach Bar & Grill, 33 Meddin Drive. The north end, up by the lighthouse. The island's guide lists live music most Friday and Saturday nights.

Zunzibar. Off the hub, and the one venue that actually publishes a lineup: its own site lists live acts Thursday through Sunday at 7 p.m., with the schedule posted at zunzibar.com.

Sea Wolf Tybee, Backriver Brewery, Chamacos Tacos & Surf and A-J's Dockside. Spread across the island, mostly on the back-river and marsh side. The island's music guide credits Sea Wolf with weekend live music and Chamacos with the occasional Saturday night in peak season.

The ticketed alternative

Every one of the eight above is a bar that sometimes has music in it. The Tybee Post Theater at 10 Van Horne Avenue is the opposite: an actual room built for it, with seats, a stage and tickets. It also runs an annual music festival in November.

It's at the north end of the island, so getting there from Tybrisa means driving or taking a cart. That's the honest trade. If what you want is a booked act with a start time rather than a band in the corner of a barroom, this is the island's answer, and it's worth checking what's on before you write off Tybee as a place where evenings just sort of happen.

How we picked these eight

Four rules, and the last one is the one most lists skip.

• Walkable from the South Beach hub. Anything requiring a drive went into the second list with the distance stated in plain miles or landmarks.
• Address verified against the island's own directories. Spanky's is the single exception, and we flagged it where it sits rather than quietly dropping it.
• No padding. Eight is what the hub has. Ten would have meant importing places from the north end and calling them close, which is the exact move that gets a visitor into a car they didn't need.
• No hours, no schedules, no "open late." We'd rather publish a shorter, duller entry that's true in February than a confident one that was true on the day somebody wrote it.

Doing this on foot

Tybee's parking is metered island-wide and enforced daily, and it shapes an evening more than visitors expect. A night that begins with circling for a space and runs with an app timer in the back of your mind is a night that ends early. Guests here park free on site, one car per room, and the eight places above are all on foot from the door. We should be equally plain about what the address isn't: Sea and Breeze is steps from South Beach, not on it, and no room here has an ocean view. What the location buys is the walk.

One more thing, because a nightlife post can leave the wrong impression about a hotel. We are not adults-only. The guest who books and checks in has to be 21 or older, and anyone under 21 is welcome to stay with a 21-plus guest in the room. Families stay here all season, and this list is simply what the adults in the party can do after dinner without moving the car.

Two blocks, eight doors

The argument for this end of Tybee has never been that any single bar is remarkable. It's that a 1948 barroom, a frozen-drink wall, a karaoke bar, an upstairs balcony and two kitchens with music are all inside a few blocks of each other and of the sand, so a closed door costs you thirty seconds of walking instead of a drive across the island.
